Chapter Eleven

Nate had barely settled into his seat in the parlor when Theo whipped toward them, wielding seriousness like a scythe.

“Blair’s attack is set for tomorrow. From the sounds of it, he moved up the timeline after Belle’s escape.”

A chill coursed through him, and he clutched the arms of the chair with a death grip.

“Of course the pigeon-livered bastard would strike as soon as possible,” Ellie growled, marching over to lean by the bookshelf. “Couldn’t give us the courtesy of rallying more to the cause.”

“My men are prepared for the moment you give the signal tomorrow,” Bernard offered, placing a palm on her shoulder.

Nate cast a glance to Belle, who was perched on the arm of another chair, as if she was afraid to take up the full space.

“He’s been planning this for some time, so I’m not surprised,” Belle murmured. “What can we do to help?”

The way she put herself out there, even after everything she’d been through, struck him with admiration. Had he been forced into servitude by a monster such as Blair for so many years, given the chance, he probably would’ve kept running.

“I’ve got clockwork dolls at our disposal, ones Theo can maneuver. Think of it as a nod to old times’ sake,” Silas said, a smirk tugging his lips. “I’m sure Blair will be pleased.”

“I’ve alerted as many of the gangs as I could,” Ellie said through gritted teeth. “Though I wish I had a day or two more to increase our numbers.”

“He’s given specific instructions to target our shop as well,” Theo murmured. “Poor move on his part, as he’ll find the place devoid of the pair of us and filled with traps instead. We spent all afternoon setting up the cavalcade of surprises his men will discover the moment they step foot in our storefront.”

“Is there anything else we can do to prepare for tomorrow?” Belle asked, shifting on her perch. Her dark eyes flickered with a fear her steady voice didn’t betray.

Ellie and Theo exchanged a look, one Nate didn’t trust. His shoulders tensed on instinct, bracing him for whatever wild whimsy they’d cooked up.

Ellie pushed up from the bookshelf to meet Belle’s gaze. “There’s something you can do.”

He knew where this was headed. Belle’s nails dug into the arm of the chair she perched upon, but her gaze remained placid.

Ellie blew out a breath. “I hate to place you in this position, but we’ll need any advantage we can obtain. I’ve heard word of your prowess as an arsonist for years, Belle Griffiths, and those are the exact skills we need right now. Out of anyone, you know the locations of the warehouses and could light them on fire, minimizing Blair’s weaponry before the assault begins.”

“So you’re assigning her the most dangerous task?” Nate blurted out, unable to hold his tongue. Belle had been picked at by vultures time and time again. She didn’t deserve to be thrust into this sort of danger by her lonesome, where Blair’s men could catch or kill her.
